Hervé Koubi

Choreographer

Trained at prestigious artistic institutions, Hervé Koubi worked with some of the biggest names in dance before founding his own company in 2000. Since then, he has developed a singular choreographic universe, combining Mediterranean influences, varied artistic collaborations and a constant quest for innovation.

Of Algerian descent, Hervé Koubi is a Doctor of Pharmacy/Pharmacist biologist who has pursued his career as a dancer-choreographer and student at the University of Aix-Marseille. After beginning his apprenticeship with Anne-Marie and Michèle Sanguin and Nathalie Crimi, he trained at the Centre International de Danse Rosella Hightower in Cannes, then at the Opéra de Marseille. He performed for Claude Brumachon at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Nantes, Karine Saporta at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Caen and Thierry Smits for Compagnie Thor in Brussels.

In 2000, he created his first project, Le Golem. Since 2001, he has collaborated with Guillaume Gabriel on all his creations. He created Ménagerie (2002) and Les abattoirs, fantaisie... (2004). In 2006, he collaborated with musician Laetitia Sheriff on 4'30''. In 2007, he worked on Moon Dogs, an essay combining contemporary writing and hip-hop movement. In 2008, he began work on three choreographic essays based on three different types of writing: Coppélia, une fiancée aux yeux d'émail... / Les Suprêmes / Bref séjour chez les vivants. For these pieces, he collaborated with writer Chantal Thomas (for the creation Les Suprêmes) and notator Romain Panassié (Benesh notation - on the creation Bref séjour chez les vivants). In 2009, he began collaborating with Ivorian dancers from Compagnie Beliga Kopé on Un rendez-vous en Afrique.

Since 2010, he has been working on a project focused on the Mediterranean, with several creations: El Din (2010-2011), Ce que le jour doit à la nuit (2013), Le rêve de Léa (2014), Des hommes qui dansent (2014), Les nuits barbares ou les premiers matins du monde (2015-2016), Boys don't cry (2018), La nature des femmes (project for North African dancers) (2019), ODYSSEY in partnership with Natacha Atlas (2019-2020), Golden age (2022).

He also collaborates with video artists on video-dance projects: Max Vadukul, for Yohji Yamamoto's Coming Soon brand, with Chic Chef in 2009, Pierre Magnol for Bodyconcrete (2010) and Ovoid Edges (2012), Pierre Magnol and Michel Guimbard for Bodyconcrete 2 (2011), Stéphane Chazelon for Une Histoire de traces over the years 2012 to 2015. Sonia Paramo and Les films figures libres for a film d'auteur Hervé Koubi, l'inattendu sur tous les fronts (2018).

In parallel with the creative work of Compagnie Hervé Koubi, he is regularly invited by professional training centers in France and abroad. Since 2014 he has been an associate choreographer at the Pole National Supérieur de Danse Cannes Marseille, and since 2015 he has been an associate choreographer at the Conservatoire de Danse de Brive-la-Gaillarde.

He was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in July 2015.
