Margie Gillis Dance Foundation

The Legacy Project has allowed her to review her practice from a different perspective and to gradually revisit and open up her soloist universe to other artists.

Founded in 1981, the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation's unique choreographic universe sets out to transpose a certain vision of the human condition. The renowned choreographer tirelessly depicts our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, celebrates our hopes and the power of creation.

After nearly 50 years of prolific creation and over a hundred works choreographed and performed, the Foundation is embarking on a new artistic journey. Launched in 2015, the Legacy Project is an ever-evolving initiative dedicated to sharing Margie Gillis' creative history and philosophy. This project has allowed her to review her practice from a different perspective and, through various workshops, training courses, and reworking of old creations, to gradually revisit and open up her soloist universe to other artists. The Legacy Project was born at the persistent request of many dance professionals to document and transmit her vast repertoire.

This mission is reflected in all the Foundation's new projects. For instance, Evolutions, created in 2017, features Legacy's nine dancers interpreting a selection of Gillis' repertoire. In 2020, in Literature of the Body, the Legacy Project dancers deepen the process by interpreting Gillis' choreography with integrity, passion, and independence, infusing their own personalities and skills into both repertoire pieces and new works.
