IMA quintet was imagined during the period of social distancing. We found ourselves alone in our true home – our body – where the main tangible and temporal dimension is the present, and our existence becomes more sensitive to small things. In this space, the need to relate to the other, in the absence of physical contact, leads to a deep sense of connection and longing for co-creation. Being alone with our bodies makes us perceive that everything, inside and around, has not stopped, on the contrary it keeps existing in a dance of universal interconnection.
“The universe is movement itself, pleasure to create, vitality that constantly renews: everything is dance. In this perspective is implicit the message: you are not alone; however precarious, isolated, or desperate you may feel, you participate in one immense dance; […] If you want to become aware of this union and perceive reality in its deepest essence, dance.” — Esperienze delle Vette by Piero Ferrucci.
Dear spectators,
This week I’m excited to bring you IMA, a one-of-a-kind creation. But first, let me tell you about the young choreographer behind this captivating work.
It was at a festival in Stuttgart, Germany, that I had the privilege of discovering the dazzling talent of Italian choreographer Sofia Nappi, whose artistic approach touched me deeply. I was instantly won over by her passionate commitment to the art of choreography. In fact, I was so taken by it that Danse Danse will be co-producing her next work, which will be presented in one of our future seasons.
After discovering Italian choreographer Silvia Gribaudi last year, we’re very pleased to be able to continue injecting a touch of Italy into our seasons and thus proposing new perspectives on dance.
IMA invites you to enjoy an experience that, in just 45 minutes, will transport you to new realms of emotion and beauty. Because sometimes intensity lies in brevity.
Enjoy the show!
Pierre Des Marais— Artistic and Executive Director
Danse Danse acknowledges that we are gathered on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’keha:ka Nation. We honour the continued presence of Indigenous peoples on the Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal) territory, which has long served as a meeting place for exchanges between nations. With respect for the links to the past, present and future, we thank the Indigenous peoples for reminding us of the importance of living in harmony with ourselves, with each other and with nature, and we are grateful for the opportunity to present works of living art at Tiohtiá:ke.
As you witness IMA I invite you to immerse yourself in the moment and to experience it as it is.
This project was conceived in a time of profound isolation, during which we were all compelled to retreat into the sanctuary of our own bodies, our most primal home. It was here, in the silence and solitude, that the essence of IMA took root. The realization that life's rhythm persists, connecting us all in an unseen dance of interdependence, has been a guiding force in our creative process.
This is a journey of coming back to oneself and, simultaneously, reaching out to the infinite connections that bind us to each other.
The work talks about the human, so there is irony, darkness, joy, pleasure and a multitude of subtle stories from the artists who perform it that color the piece.
I therefore invite you to enjoy the journey and prepare your luggage!
